Designed for Safety

At Hutchinson Toyota of Albany, there's nothing more important to us than your safety. That's why we're extremely proud to introduce Toyota Safety Sense (TSS), a wide array of cutting edge active safety technologies designed to help prevent or mitigate collisions, thus protecting drivers, passengers, and pedestrians from injury. To this end, TSS is divided into two separate safety packages: Toyota Safety Sense C (TSS-C) for compact vehicles, and Toyota Safety Sense P (TSS-P) for mid-sized and larger vehicles.

Toyota Safety Sense C features a trio of proprietary safety technologies. The first of these is the Pre-Collision System (PCS). This is a vehicle detection system that employs both a camera and radar. When the system detects an object in the moving vehicle's path, it prompts the driver to brake. If the driver fails to do so, the system applies the brakes of its own accord, reducing speed to avoid a collision.

The second system is the Lane Departure Alert (LDA). This system utilizes a camera to detect the white and yellow lane markings on the road. If the system detects that the vehicle has started to unintentionally deviate from its lane, it alerts the driver both visually and audibly. LDA is designed to work at speeds of 32 MPH or higher, but it should be noted that inclement weather such as heavy rain, snow, and fog could cause the system to not function properly.

The third system is the Automatic High Beam (AHB), which uses a camera to detect oncoming vehicles' headlights, and automatically switches between low and high beam. This system is designed to help drivers see more of what's ahead of them at night without blinding others. When turned on, AHB used an in-vehicle camera to help detect both the headlights of oncoming vehicles and the taillights of preceding vehicles, then automatically switches between high and low beams to provide the most light possible, thus enhancing visibility.

Toyota Safety Sense P features an in-vehicle camera and front-grille-mounted, millimeter-wave radar to help detect the vehicle in front of you. In certain instances, the TSS-P system may include the Pre-Collision System with Pedestrian Detection Function (PCS w/PD). This feature works just like the aforementioned PSC system. However, the PCS w/PD identifies potential pedestrians based on person size, profile, and motion.

Lastly, some TSS-P equipped Toyota vehicles include Dynamic Radar Cruise Control (DRCC). On the highway, DRCC functions similarly to conventional 'constant speed' cruise control in that it helps vehicles travel at a consistent speed set by the driver, but this system adds a vehicle-to-vehicle distance control mode which assists the driver by adjusting vehicle speed to help maintain a preset distance to a preceding vehicle when the preceding vehicle is traveling at a lower speed.
